Best joke of the SOTU
President Obama: The Interior Department is in charge of salmon while they’re in fresh water, but the Commerce Department handles them when they’re in saltwater. (Laughter.) I hear it gets even more complicated one they’re smoked. (Laughter and applause.)
Jessica: Then the Jews take over. (Standing ovation.)

AZ shooting + Tunisia uprising =
… = not enough space to talk about how it’s not even the end of January and already Prince George’s County in Maryland has had not one, not two, not ten, but fifteen murders. Maybe plain old everyday violence and death don’t have the same sex appeal as a “Jasmine Revolution” in a Muslim country with a fled president, or a crazy kid with too much access to deadly...

On food, continued
I don’t do anything special when I decide what to eat. I don’t count calories; I don’t weigh and measure zone blocks; I don’t tally up Weight Watchers points. I don’t fall neatly into any one dietary box.
What I do: prepare the vast majority of my meals at home from scratch; read ingredients lists on prepared food; avoid (but not ban) pasta, bread, and sugar; choose...

What I ate
I’ve been inspired. Over at Slate, Ellen Tarlin is writing a blog called Clean Plate, about food, nutrition, and eating. Part of Ellen’s food angst is that she’s not sure what she should eat; the blog is sort of an exploration of that, complete with experiments and occasional odes to Michael Pollan, whom I also love.
I’m not sure either what I should eat. But I think I eat...
My only thoughts on AZ
I am tired, tired, tired of hearing about the crazy guy with the crazy gun shooting a bunch of normal, just-going-about-their-day people in Arizona. I mean, I get it: It’s tragic. It’s white-on-white violence. It has the nutty element. The guy had an Internet presence. A nine year old will never see her tenth birthday. And, of course, this is an opportunity for people who prefer civil...

Do yourself a favor: before you send in that deposit check, talk to someone you trust (a lawyer you trust, if such a thing can exist) about the reality of your post-grad prospects. And while you’re at it, get yourself financially literate and don’t be an idiot about money. Student loans are deadly. They do not just, like, go away.
